What does the coat take?

A Shih Tzu in a full coat needs brushing every day. A pin brush with flexible pins works well, going through the coat in layers so the brush reaches the skin, with a bath every three or four weeks. The mustache and the topknot get a daily comb as well, and nail trims and ear cleaning belong in the routine too.

If that's more than your mornings can hold, a professional groomer can clip your Shih Tzu into a short puppy trim, which looks adorable and spares you the daily brushing. Long or short, the hair on top of the head is kept short or gathered into a topknot, away from the eyes. Either way the coat is a real line in the budget, paid in time or in groomer visits, so plan for it the way you'd plan for food.

What else does a Shih Tzu cost to keep?

A Shih Tzu asks for less exercise than most dogs. Short daily walks and some play indoors cover it, which suits a family without a big yard. Vet care starts right away, because the core puppy shots carry on past 16 weeks of age, so set up that first visit early.

Food and training make up most of the rest. A Shih Tzu is very good at charming its owner into letting it have its way, which can end in a chubby dog that isn't fully housebroken, so a puppy class built on praise and rewards is worth the fee. Keep the treats honest, because the breed puts on weight easily. Summer calls for some care too, and our Shih Tzu health guide explains why the breed struggles in the heat.

How does the deposit work?

You apply first, and a deposit follows once you're approved. A non-refundable deposit of one third of the puppy price holds a puppy that is already listed. A $200 non-refundable deposit holds a place on the waiting list for a litter that has not been born yet. Deposits are non-refundable, but they can be transferred to another puppy up to three times, or held for a year.

Puppies go home at 9 weeks, and the full sequence is on how it works. When you're ready, start with the application, and meet our Shih Tzu puppies on the breed page.
