What colors do Cavaliers come in?

Four, and each has its own marks to look for.

  • Blenheim. Chestnut markings broken up across a pearly white coat, with chestnut ears and a white blaze between the eyes. Some Blenheims carry a chestnut spot in the middle of that blaze, known as the lozenge or Blenheim spot, which is prized but not required.
  • Tricolor. The same broken pattern in jet black on white, with black ears and rich tan markings in four places, over the eyes, on the cheeks, on the inner ears and beneath the tail.
  • Black and tan. Jet black, with bright tan above the eyes and on the cheeks, the insides of the ears, the chest, the legs and the underside of the tail.
  • Ruby. Rich red all over, with no white.

In the show ring, heavy ticking, which is small flecks of colored hair scattered through the white, counts against a Blenheim or a tricolor, and white marks count against a ruby or a black and tan. At home those are matters of looks.

Which colors do we raise?

The Cavaliers on our recent listings have been Blenheim, tricolor and ruby. Each pairing is chosen on purpose, and where we have DNA results for a mama and papa, they help us plan the colors a litter may carry.

If your heart is set on one color, tell us on the application. You can reserve a newborn by gender and color, then choose your puppy from the litter at 4 to 5 weeks, by which time you can see far more of each puppy's coat and character. Our guide to picking a puppy walks through how that choice works.

What does a Cavalier cost to keep?

Grooming costs are low, and most of the budget goes to food and vet care. Cavaliers shed lightly, and the silky coat needs little beyond regular brushing and a bath now and then, with the ears checked every week for signs of infection and the nails trimmed at least once a month.

Cavaliers are easygoing company, as happy on a long walk as on the sofa for an afternoon. They shouldn't be off leash outside a fence, because the old spaniel nose can lead them off after a scent, and some Cavaliers put on weight easily, so measure meals and go light on the treats.

Is there a teacup or miniature Cavalier?

No. There's one Cavalier, 12 to 13 inches at the shoulder and 13 to 18 pounds, with slight differences allowed. There's no teacup or miniature size, and the Cavalier is already counted as a toy spaniel.

Teacup is a sales label on any breed, as our guide to what a teacup puppy is explains, along with the extra care very small puppies can need with low blood sugar and falls. We expect our own Cavaliers to reach 19 to 22 lbs as grown dogs, going by their parents, and each puppy's page links to its mama and papa.

What health checks should a breeding Cavalier have?

Cavaliers can be prone to eye problems, slipping kneecaps, hip problems, middle ear infections, a heart valve disease and a condition of the spinal cord, and breeders can check for all of them, with most Cavaliers living comfortably into old age. A Cavalier used for breeding should have its kneecaps, hips, heart and eyes checked, with the heart examined by a cardiologist, ideally once a year.

We are working toward health testing all of our mamas and papas, and the certificates we have are posted on each parent's page. So far the ones for our Cavalier parents cover eye, heart and kneecap exams. We're glad to talk through any of them, and for questions about a particular condition, ask your vet as well. Our Cavalier health guide goes through each condition.

How do I reserve a Cavalier?

Our puppy application comes first, and approval is followed by a deposit to hold your Cavalier. A non-refundable deposit of one third of the puppy price holds a puppy that is already listed. Deposits are non-refundable, but they can be transferred to another puppy up to three times, or held for a year.

Puppies go home at 9 weeks, and how it works covers pickup and delivery. Our Cavalier puppies are on the breed page with their photographs and prices.
